Believe it or not, I am an Olympian (Wrestling,Mexico City, 1968). What goes besides the actual sports events is NOT the olympics. It is just a show each country puts on trying to showcase themselves... mostly for political reasons. Case in point, China spend the equivalent of over $350 million dollars in producing the opening ceremony. With that kind of money, they could have feed millions of destitute and poor chinese for several years.
So dont knock the efforts of all Olympians, past and present. These men and women work hard, train harder and try to excel in their sports in order to earn a spot in their countries' teams and go do their best efforts in the world sport forum the Olympics are.
Of course, there are some exceptions like China, the old URSS, Cuba, North Korea and other similar totalitarian countries who turn their athlethes into professional sports machines. Not fair but, even then, the rest of the world's athletes manages to beat those in their own grounds and turf.
As the Baron of Cobertin used to say: "THE IMPORTANT ISSUE IS NOT TO WIN, BUT TO COMPETE" in an ambiance of brotherhood and sportsmanship....
People who boycott the Games just turn things into political crap.
