Well, I can tell you from expierience that cutting calories, bad fats, and bad charlestorel(sp?) out of your daily diet are all good first steps, then of course you're gonna also want to throw some exercise in there, and I'd recommend walking, lots and lots of walking, it's the best kind of exercise for you if you're not planning on being a marathon runner,

and if you are, then I'd also say to do some jogging/running
