According to Stanley Conley, the most intellingent dog is the border collie. This is followed by the poodle, German shepherd, golden retriever and the doberman Pinscher.

I think they also decided to drop the name 'German Shepard' during World War I due to the conflict... the name 'Alsatian'. The names stuck on ever since, especially in the UK.

"they" could not have dropped the name 'German Shepard'. Not on your life! Why? For the simple reason there is no such name for a dog breed. It is "German SHEPHERD"!

As for Alsatian, it was just an invention made during WWII as you say but it never really picked up. That would be like calling french fries "liberty fries" as it happened in the post 9/11 era for some reason I dont recall (and I did not get this info out of some internet page. ok? I just know it from somewhere).

Hmm well I'm sure that German Shepard is the common name right now but Alsatian is still used. According to Wikipedia that is, it's an official name for the dog breed. But point taken, especially about 'liberty fries'

I've actually never heard of that term before.

For me the best and smartest dog breeds are (in that order):

1- Weirmaraner (I have a two year old bitch who thinks she is human and even plays soccer. No, no kidding!).

2- Heler (the great Australian Cattle Dog) I own one. Just wonderful and very doggy. And yeh, I know this is a dog created our of the Collie, Dalmatian and Dingo breeds....

3- Australian Dingo. A really hardy dog, smart as heck. I also own one, very civilized.

I have never heard of an "Alsatian" as a German Shepard.
Maybe because I live in the US and sometimes I am not aware of what is going on in other parts of the country. Just saying...

that alsatian thing happened during WWII and derived from the anti German feelings of those times. But it was most concentrated in the British Isles and dependencies. Most every other country still called the breed "German Shepherds, (not Shepards).

and wait, wait... "you live in the US and are not aware of what is going on in other parts of the country"? I think I know what were you trying to say but.... correct me, please?

kissy kissy.

I meant I know what is going on but not the things like the changes of the dog names. And little things that are not broadcasted on the news.

I was not talking news, honey!

U know wikkipedia? Use it. You will be surprised the kind of useless/useful cr*p u will find there. Or, GOOGLE IT. Same thing.

The dog breed name was just a cause of antigerman sentiments. Just like sometime ago, fast food places began calling French Fries as "Liberty Fries" due to a temporary anti french sentiment that formed around for some reason I dont recall but which you can easily Google.
